To transform itself into a lighter, quicker and more easily deployable force, the U.S. Army needs an advanced, lightweight ammunition packaging system. The Army and Marines have learned in Iraq and Afghanistan that current ammunition packaging, which uses heavy rectangular or cylindrical steel containers, is too heavy and bulky. The extreme weight has become an unnecessary and dangerous burden for the soldiers and the entire logistic supply system.  Excessive weight reduces mobility and sacrifices the agility of soldiers in combat situations. For example, the current metal packaging for 120mm mortar ammunition weighs 97 pounds and it takes at least two soldiers to carry it.

Frontier has collaborated with ARDEC engineers to develop an advanced, lightweight, ammunition packaging system for packaging and protection of a wider range of munitions including, but not limited to 81mm and 120mm mortars with objectives that include:

  • Providing a safer means of storage for high explosives
  • Reducing the threat of Nuclear, Biological and Chemical (NBC) contamination
  • Providing faster and easier access to packaged ammunition
  • Lightening the packaging weight by 50%
  • Enhancing the Insensitive Munitions capability to improve safety and reduce the likelihood of accident
  • Lowering loading, assembling and packing costs
